Chiller SystemsThermoChillTM
Steam Jet Chiller Systems
Operation
Warm water is directed into the top chilling section (for maximum design cooling capacity). A portion (approx. 1/3) of the required drop in temperature is taken away from the water in each section by a heat equivalent portion of water vapor evaporated and compressed by each booster ejector. The vapor is taken off at an absolute pressure equal to the saturation pressure for the desired water temperature (ex. 9.6 mm HgA at 45 °F). The vapor plus the steam consumption of each booster is delivered to the top barometric (direct contact) condenser to be condensed with available cooling tower water. This condenser is maintained under vacuum (for maximum efficiency) by a small 2 stage steam jet system. This main condenser may also be a shell & tube condenser to minimize the overall effluent from the system (to just the condensate equivalent of the vapor plus steam consumption).
Capacity control is accomplished by turning boosters off (steam supply), starting with the top booster, and directing the water to be chilled to the top most section with a booster on. This will give approximately 1/3 incremental control. A smoothing of cooling capacity can be accomplished by cycling the last booster turned off.

Chiller Equations
Tonnage = (Gpm x 500 x DT)/12,000
(12,000 BTU/hr = the amount of energy required to freeze a ton of ice in 24 hrs, heat of fusion = 144 BTU/lb
x 2000/24 )
Water Vapor Evaporated (lb/hr) =
(Gpm x 500 x DT)/Latent Heat
Approx. Tower Diameter
d = 1.13 Ö(GPM((0.134 x DT x n)/Lat. HT.) + 1)
Where: n = specific vol. of water vapor at the chill water outlet temperature (as the sat. temp.)
The Lat. Ht. is at the same condition
Approx. Tower Height ranges from 40 ft. to 100 ft.
